Lapkričio 29 d., pirmąjį Advento sekmadienį, pradedant vidinio budėjimo mėnesį ir įžengiant į naujuosius liturginius metus, po Pasaulio Lietuvių Centre (PLC), Lemonte, esančioje Palaimintojo Jurgio Matulaičio Misijos bažnyčioje kunigo Vaido Lukoševičiaus SJ aukotų šv. Mišių, žymiam JAV lietuvių bendruomenės nariui mecenatui Rimui Juozui Baniui buvo įteiktas Lietuvos Respublikos Užsienio reikalų ministerijos apdovanojimas „Už pasaulio lietuvių nuopelnus Lietuvai”. Prestižiniu garbės ženklu „Aukso Vyčiu” Rimas J. Banys buvo apdovanotas už ypatingus nuopelnus puoselėjant lietuvybę išeivijoje, paramą lietuviškoms organizacijoms ir kolektyvams.

Apdovanojimą Palaimintojo Jurgio Matulaičio misijos bažnyčioje  po šv. Mišių įteikęs LR Generalinis konsulas Čikagoje Mantvydas Bekešius kalbėjo: „Prieš tris metus atvykęs dirbti į Čikagą, lietuvybės sostinę, turėjau galimybę kiekvieną dieną vis iš naujo patirti, ką reiškia meilė Lietuvai, mūsų kalbai ir tradicijoms. Būtent čia aš sutikau nuoširdžiai Tėvynei atsidavusių lietuvių, kurie, negailėdami savo laiko, sveikatos ir lėšų, dirba tam, kad Lietuva būtų stipri, kad diasporoje auganti naujoji karta nepamirštų savo šaknų. Todėl šiandien man yra didelė garbė įteikti šį apdovanojimą Rimui Juozui Baniui, kuris yra puikus tokios veiklos pavyzdys ir, neabejoju, kad ateityje įkvėps ir bendruomenės lyderius rūpintis tėvų ir senelių palikimu JAV bei dirbti vardan Lietuvos ateities“.

Rimas J. Banys yra vienas žymiausių mecenatų, daug metų dosniai aukojusių Pasaulio lietuvių centrui bei kitoms lietuviškoms organizacijoms. Ilgą laiką jis nuolat aukojo Vydūno jaunimo fondui, o 2018 metais įkūrė vardinę stipendiją savo žmonai a. a. Nijolei Banienei atminti. Ši stipendija teikiama lietuvių kilmės studentams, kurie yra studijavę bent dvejus metus Ilinojaus valstijos pagrindiniuose, pripažintuose meno universitetuose bei kolegijose, siekdami įgyti meno studijų (tapybos, keramikos, skulptūros, grafinio dizaino, animacijos ir pan.) bakalauro, magistro ar daktaro laipsnį. R. J. Banys yra rėmęs labdaros fondą „Saulutė“, kuris remia našlaičius ir beglobius vaikus Lietuvoje, bei organizaciją „Vaiko vartai į mokslą“, kuri remia vaikus iš socialinės rizikos šeimų dienos centruose ir laikinosios globos namuose. R. Banys taip pat aukoja didžiausiam ir seniausiam išeivijoje Lietuvių fondui.

Praėjusiais metais R. Banys parėmė PLC Vienybės parko įgyvendinimo ir infrastruktūros atnaujinimo projektus. Lemonte esančiame Pasaulio lietuvių centre įsikūrę per 40 lietuviškų organizacijų, veikia bažnyčia, trys krepšinio salės, futbolo stadionai, didžiausia JAV lituanistinė mokykla, kurioje mokosi per 700 vaikų, nuolat vyksta kultūriniai renginiai, organizuojamos stovyklos, repetuoja didžiausi tautinių šokių kolektyvai „Grandis“, “Spindulys” ir „Suktinis“, meno ansamblis „Dainava”. Pasaulio lietuvių centre veikia gerai žinoma Lietuvių dailės muziejaus galerija „Siela“, kur rengiamos parodos, veikia vaikų ir suaugusiųjų meno dirbtuvės, vyksta kultūriniai renginiai, koncertai. Viena didžiausių PLC salių už ilgametę paramą centrui yra pavadinta Banio šeimos vardu.

Rimas J. Banys gimė Kaune. Per karą šeima pasitraukė iš Lietuvos ir įsikūrė Čikagoje. R. Banys studijavo Ilinojaus technologijų institute (IIT) (Prezidento Valdo Adamkaus Alma mater). Dirbo bendrovėje Harza Engineering Co., kurioje profesinę karjerą pradėjo kaip inžinierius, vėliau tapo kompanijos direktorių tarybos pirmininku ir vadovavo stambiems infrastruktūros projektams visame pasaulyje. Šiuo metu R. J. Banys gyvena Čikagos priemiestyje ir jau daug metų dosniai aukoja lietuviškoms organizacijoms ir su Lietuva susijusioms labdaringoms iniciatyvoms.
